A Pointless Existence

# 610 3 - 4 mins. 2

One thing that had never made sense to me about Christianity is the premise itself. The story is that God wanted someone to love him, so he made mankind. And therefore, we were designed to worship him. But does that actually make any sense? And to take it a step further, what does that make us?

First off, let's take a look at the mindset of God. If you subscribe to this thinking, you are choosing to believe that God was lonely. Although it may not mean he needs company, it still implies it, and God is supposed to be without needs. So this is the first point that doesn't really make any sense. If God is all powerful, why should he need mankind to worship him. So let's assume that's not the case. Maybe he doesn't need us to worship him, but just prefers to make a lifeform that will worship him. I have several problems with this as well.

First off, Humans are terrible at worshiping him. The bible is filled with examples of people worshiping chunks of stone instead of the one true god. People pray to false idols. They expect fire to rain down from made up gods. They do the opposite of what God asks over and over again. And I understand, free will is what makes it valuable. If we were forced to do it, it would mean nothing. But that still doesn't change the fact that so much of the history of man is spent defying God.

Second, what does it say about us as individuals? It is saying that we were created for the purpose of worshipping God. Our whole existence means nothing except for how it pertains to worshipping God. And this is an all-powerful God who created us for that sole purpose. Doesn't that sound strange? To me, it sounds like a dumb game. Like we are a bunch of guinea pigs running around in the maze set out for us. Some of us will choose to worship God, while others will run in the opposite direction.

And that leads me to my third point. Doesn't salvation mean nothing at that point? What do we do to choose salvation? People are born into lifestyles that precondition them to follow other religions. Are we really supposed to call it just? That those people go to hell while the people raised in Christian homes go to heaven? Why am I any more deserving of heaven than someone born in India where Hinduism is the most common religion? I'm not anything special. In fact, I'm so unsure of everything that I'm writing this blog. But am I wrong for questioning? Or is it just the result of the life I lived and the experiences I've had? If it's not a result of the experiences I've had, and it is based on who I am as a person, then I had no control over it. In that case, there are certain people that will never be saved regardless of what they do. It was predetermined.

So why would a God who loves us create people who would never love him and then send them to an eternity of torture? That does not sound like a loving God. That sounds like a cruel messed up experiment. Why should I follow a God who sets some of us up for failure? Sure, he sent his son to die on the cross for our sins, but what have we done to be predestined to go to hell before we were even in existence? Do we not all deserve the best for being part of this traumatic expiriment?
